Ambassador Riva Ganguly Das has been serving at India’s External Affairs Ministry since 1986 swerving in Spain, Dhaka, The Hague, and later joining as Consul General of India in Shanghai and Ambassador to Romania, Albania & Moldova. She also served in other assignments including as Director at the United Nations Economic and Social Affairs Division, Alternate Permanent Representative of India to the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at The Hague and Public Diplomacy Division in the Ministry of External Affairs and as in charge of the Latin America & Caribbean Division in the Ministry of External Affairs. A Post Graduate in Political Science from Delhi University, she was a Lecturer at Delhi University before joining the Indian Foreign Service.

Stamford Dollars for Scholars Scholarship

Dollars for Scholars have extended their deadline! All applications should be submitted online on or before April 17th  to be eligible for our scholarship.

If any members of GOPIO have children graduating from high school in Stamford Area, they can go to the link given below for application. While applying, they need to specify “GOPIO Scholarship” in their application so that the review committee will tag them against ours. Please note that being a member alone does not guarantee an award – they still need to meet the criteria listed in the scholarship, and all final decisions will be taken by the Stamford Dollars for Scholars review board.

We are also collecting donations to add to the GOPIO-CT Scholarship Funds. If you would like to donate, please check the link below.

Over the last seven years, GOPIO-CT has formed strong partnerships with other Indian organizations and local communities across a cross-section of Connecticut. Community-building activities have included:

  • Annual awards banquets honoring achievements and service of community leaders, such as: Congressman Christopher Shays, Nayan Chanda of Yale University, Dr. Prasad Srinivasan, Sameer Ahuja, late Rajendra Shukla, Dr. T.N. Srinivasan of Yale University, Dr. A.V. Srinivasan, Namasakar Foundation, Dr. Priya Natarajan, Mayor of Stamford – Dan Malloy, US Senator Chris Dodd, Harman Chairman and CEO Dinesh Paliwal and Paul Semanski, Asha for Hope Foundation.   • Indian Film Festivals at U-CONN Stamford and Westport, screening a selection of short feature films. The film festivals were offered free to all seniors.
  • Flag hoisting ceremonies to celebrate India’s Independence Day in August at the Government Center in Stamford with the Mayor.
  • Health and wellness education programs on the importance of nutrition in disease management.
  • Diwali celebrations at U-CONN Stamford, including children’s activities and youth dance performances.
  • Interactive sessions with Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia, Congressman Jim Himes and Ambassador Prabhu Dayal, Congressman Christopher Shays, Deputy Consul General A.R. Ghanashyam, Connecticut senatorial and congressional candidates Dianne Farrell and Ned Lamont, Prof. Panagaria of Columbia University, Dr. Maya Chadda of William Paterson University and Prof. WIlliam Pinch of Wesleyan University.
  • Ghazal concert by Shanti Hiranand and group in December 2009 and talk by business cycle expert Lakshman Achuthan in March 2010.
  • GOPIO-CT youth chapter raised money for the Bal Sadan Orphanage in Panchkula, India. Bal Sadan brings abandoned children out of destitution and into the safety of the orphanage.
  • GOPIO-CT volunteers serve at the soup kitchen at Yerwood Center, Stamford.
